A Very COVID Fourth

While COVID-19 has been surging past 4,660 cases in Polk County, Florida, it’s been advertised that a real life social distancing experiment will be conducted on the Fourth. The City of Davenport will become a humongous parking lot for anyone wanting to see our fireworks. It’ll be a first of its kind event anywhere in Polk, and — being on the Ridge — a singular event in Florida and, of course, always free (well, except for the food trucks).

Since the coronavirus is here to stay — with some estimates coming in that we’ll be dealing with it and its aftermath for years — there’s no getting away from it. Davenport appears ready to deal with it, to meet head-on the challenge of accommodating so many people into one historical little city (and with social distancing to boot).

In lieu of all-day entertainment, which was not an attention grabber anyway, only fireworks will be displayed, and in lieu of having a traffic jam in the back of the neighborhood, which was traditional until COVID, the traffic jam will be moved closer to Rt. 27. Davenport will become a veritable parking lot for sightseers.

This year’s sky blossoms will be blasting from our highest point, thus accommodating for a maximum elevation for all to view. To add to the excitement, sky lights will direct everyone to their own best spot.

If you can stay at home, enjoy, but if you can’t stand another night in front of the TV, come on over and park your car. You’ll be welcomed.

  1. On the plus side I should be a le to get in and out of my driveway this year. But I won’t have as good a view of the fireworks from my yard, they are a little further away.
