An Epstein-Class War Thing

While it would make sense that, during wars populations decrease, that doesn’t happen in aggressor nations. For example, “Israel recorded double the number of long-term visitors and an increase in short-stay visitors in 2024,” after it started attacking its neighbors and enabling a genocide on Palestinians. Unfortunately something else far more horrifying than just war has been getting the attention of Gaza’s doctors over the past year. It harkens back to something the ultra-wealthy have done before without consequence and may be doing so again today, again without consequence.

Between 1992 and 1996, “during the Siege of Sarajevo, an alleged war tourism phenomenon was reported. It was known as sniper safaris. It involved humans hunting and killing other humans in an active war zone. This one was dubbed the Sarajevo Safari. According to reports, wealthy foreign nationals were allowed, for sums as large as $90,000, to shoot at civilians in the besieged city with sniper rifles for entertainment purposes.”

Learning about that phenomenon made me think of Israel’s genocide in Gaza where doctors reported that “children are being targeted and shot dead by Israeli snipers. Apparently the rule is two shots per child, one through their hearts and the second through their heads.”

I would have to question if there is war tourism going on there right now. It’s been reported that “the practise of participatory war tourism is a gateway for an IDF volunteer class that often serves in Israeli campaigns before returning to their societies of citizenship, with no accountability for their deeds.” If this is true, then, yes, oligarchs and their ilk are participating in what I suspect is a war crime right now in Gaza.

While there haven’t been reports about war tourism happening in Iran, it’s probably because they don’t let outsiders in at all. But, could we be saying the same about them someday soon?
