This paper was presented to the City of Davenport Board of Commissioners the night of Monday, June 1, 2026.

Errata

  • Page 1 – Regarding the phrase “… that person had paid [Dollar] barely anything for chopping down nearly a quarter-acre of tall grass …” That person was Martha Cox, who worked forever, it seemed, at Holly Hill, her employer. She had a second job as a clerk at her church but it is not known if she was paid. Her husband, Luther, appeared to have been a metal worker. Nonetheless, “the Cox’s were far from wealthy. To be sure, they were probably cash deficient even by the standards of their time …” Therefore, it is likely that Mrs. Cox could not afford to pay much to Dollar.

After working three years at the Davenport Historical Society and years of research and writing about Davenport via my blog, I have come to a different interpretation of the City of Davenport’s history than the one being told. I found in my research that some of Davenport’s history hasn’t been well-documented, and one big part of our history apparently completely missed. I call it Davenport’s Missing Letter B.
