What’s Scary Orwellian?

When I hear our government officials, like Ron DeSantis, referring to “government speech” or Mitt Romney in 2011 saying “corporations are people,” I recognize these linguistic twists as scary Orwellian. Hey! Right here in Davenport, our city lawyer recently redefined the word “year” to mean 10 months in his “interpretation” of our Charter. That’s scary Orwellian.

Just like people now know that yelling fire in a theater is against the law, people must know by now that “alternative facts” defy actual facts, but they don’t. For example, DeSantis’ chemtrails myth is now Florida law. That’s scary Orwellian.

DeSantis’ government speech “doctrine … says the government has the right to promote its own views without a requirement to provide a platform for opposing views. (The Ledger, 10/6/25, p.1.) A “view” is something perceived by human beings, not by non-human entities. Government, while comprised of human beings, is not a human being itself. Corporations, while comprised of human beings, are not human beings themselves.

A year is 12 months, not 10. Chemtrails is nothing more than condensation; it is not true. There is a new film named Orwell: 2 + 2 = 5. Watch it. You will understand what I’m saying.

  1. Excellent piece. You’re absolutely right — when officials start twisting language to fit political agendas, that’s when democracy starts to slip. Calling a 10-month period a “year,” or pretending myths are laws, is exactly the kind of Orwellian manipulation Orwell warned about. Words matter, truth matters, and redefining reality is the first step toward losing it. Thank you for calling it out so clearly.
