Polk County, Florida — In response to an article that Polk County commissioner Bill Braswell posted in the local Four Corners Sun that was heavily supportive of tariffs, I asked him by email, “What are you going to do about the increase in homelessness in Polk County once tariffs start affecting us middle- and poor-class folks?” Then he responded.
He did so sincerely and with words specific to answer my question, an action so rare for a voter representative to do, a politician, that it nearly knocked me out of my seat. Below is his response.
Of course, I didn’t agree with him about everything he said, so respectfully, I responded. My response is below.
To my Radical Left-Lunatic Readers: Do you think tariffs will eventually increase or decrease the issue of homelessness in America?

According to the Wall Street Journal (04-14-2024) and the Economist (10-19-2024) the American economy (the Biden economy) was “the envy of the world.” The stock market was at a record high and inflation was among the world’s lowest. This is what Trump has wrecked. Why does he do something this harmful to Americans? Why does he insult our best and closest friends? I have no clue, but I do know that it is stupid to think that this benefits any American or any of our friends.

It is difficult to imagine a more flawed human being. I wonder about us as a society. How could so many of us vote for such a deranged, flawed and cruel human being?

I couldn’t agree with you more, Richard. We are no more a democracy. We are no more a Republic. Because of the oligarchy that is America today, the general population, at least the MAGAs, have descended to barbarianism. I can’t think of the right words but it seems that we are regressing back to a survival of the fittest society, but this time “the fittest” means “the monied” society.
As for the cruelty, that has never left us. Just look at some of the most popular sports of our day, such as football or boxing. Just like the German’s, way back when, the masses, or at least the MAGAs, are embracing schadenfreude as the best way to live life.
